Beer Can Chicken
This yardbird got tossed into the Weber Smokey Mountain last Sunday at 9 AM while I was doing yard work. At 12:50 PM this was the juicy treat reporting for lunch duty. Good thing 'cause I was hungry!
I've had the beer can cooking stand for years. Some people just balance the birds but that seems like a disaster waiting to occur.
1 4-5 pound frying chicken
1 can of beer, two thirds full (I used Tecate)
Rub - whatever kind you like
baste (or mop) - I like to keep the skin moist so it doesn't turn into chicken leather. Today I just used Wishbone Italian dressing, brushed all over the bird every hour.
The smoker was going at 6 AM for a pork butt so the WSM was already chugging along at an indicated 250 degrees. The pork was on the lower, cooler rack, because it smoked all day long. Hickory smoke caressed the meat and drove me crazy as I caught wind of it while swinging the weed wacker.
Chili beans and Jalapeno Cheddar bread rounded out the meal with peaches for dessert.
This entire post was done on my Droid Incredible phone. Fun device.

I've never used a stand for my beer can chicken. If you already have one use it.
Any more though I forgo the can and just stand the bird up.I've yet to have one fall over.
I'm already basting what do I need the beer for? Besides, I think that can half full of 300 degree beer being pulled out of the chicken's rear end is the disaster waiting to happen.
Better off just drinking the beer.
I think the idea is for the beer to heat the inside of the chicken, so it cooks more evenly/faster.
I think the can of beer really functions as a heat sink and prevents the breast of the bird from overcooking.
Any steaming is probably minimal at the low temps I prefer to cook at.
If someone can't extract the can of beer from the bird without burning themselves they probably shouldn't be around fire or sharp objects anyway.
I use the Weber poultry roaster. Same principle as the beer can method except I get to drink all the beer.
If I miss out on two thirds of a can of beer I somehow manage to carry on despite the horrific cost.
where can I get a stand like yours?
Anon - I think I bought mine at Sportsman's Warehouse but it was 10 years ago or more.
